Make Sure You Use English Daily

Surrounding yourself with English every day is one of the fastest ways to build your speaking skills.

But you might be wondering, "how can I surround myself with English?"

It's not difficult if you know:

  • Where to look
  • what to listen to
  • how to find people to talk with

So, here are our top tips - the exact methods we used to help us start learning a second language.

Teacher Arvyn's tips for learning English

Teacher Arvyn has been learning Spanish for quite some time, and his skills are pretty good!

So, when it comes to learning a language, he knows his stuff. Here are his top tips for making English part of your day, and he also uses them to make Spanish part of his daily routine.

Put Your Cell Phone Apps in English

You use apps every day.

You can choose any app on your phone:

Social media apps are obvious because we use them often, but it's the apps you don't think about that will most help you learn functional English.

So, choose an app and change the language to English.

Weather apps are great because you will learn English, and you can use them almost instantly with new people. You can learn how to talk about the weather by reading the words in English.

Or, you could try a recipe app because these often have images, meaning you will understand the new words with ease because you have pictures to help.

Your calendar is another great option because you will learn the days of the week and the months of the year and never forget them.

Listen to English Podcasts and Music

Listening to music is passive, and people think it won't help them learn English.

People are wrong because we don't always need to listen closely to hear new words.

You can learn a lot from listening to music like:

If you hear a word you don't know, quickly look it up and listen to the song again. Doing so will help you remember the word, and you may need to search for it again the next time you listen to the song.

However, the more times you hear the song, the less chance you have of forgetting the words in English.

For podcasts, pick topics you enjoy or want to learn about, whether it's sports, history, or personal stories. Listening to English regularly helps train your ears and teaches you new vocabulary, and it won't feel like a chore.

You'll also notice common phrases used in real-life conversations, but you can learn more of these phrases faster through online content creators and their videos.

Follow "Asking People on the streets" creators

Here's where many English learners start to think that listening to English isn't helpful.

They know they need to watch TV in English so they can hear it, but they don't know what to listen to.

But learning English has two levels:

Most of our students choose to watch English videos that are far too difficult, meaning they can't understand, so they quit.

Then they stop completely and don't make English part of their daily life.

So, choosing to listen to creators asking people about their likes and dislikes on the street works because you learn functional English.

Functional English means:

  • Hello
  • Goodbye
  • What questions
  • Where questions
  • When questions
  • Why questions
  • Basic questions to ask to keep people talking to you

As you watch, pay close attention to how words sound and how sentences flow. Subtitles can help at first, but try turning them off as you grow more confident in your skills.

Arvyn has some great tips, right?

But you can't learn English only by listening - you need to speak, too.

And that's where teacher Sean excels.

Sean's Tips for Using English Everyday

Sean has extensive experience learning to speak a language, having learned Spanish at the C2 level.

Find someone who speaks English fluently and talk to them daily

When Sean was learning Spanish, he purposely found people to talk to in Spanish.

You need to do the same in English every single day - for at least 10-15 minutes.

It could be a friend, a tutor, or even someone online—but practice speaking with them often.

Don't worry about making mistakes during these conversations; they're part of learning. The goal is not perfection but improvement over time.

Remember, your goal is to help people understand you when you speak English.

If you can't find someone to practice with right away, talk out loud to yourself instead.

Describe what you're doing throughout the day or narrate your thoughts in English when alone.

It's a simple habit, but it builds confidence and makes speaking feel natural over time so that when you can speak with someone, you don't feel weird.

Next, consistent exposure helps improve your English pronunciation because you hear how words should sound repeatedly.

It also helps expand vocabulary since you'll hear new vocabulary in different contexts daily.

The more involved you become with these activities, the quicker you'll notice progress in fluency and ease of expression.

To improve your English speaking quickly, make this part of your routine rather than something occasional. It's about creating opportunities for regular interaction with the language every day.

Talk simply but give details.

Most of our students have the same problem - they understand English but say they can't speak it.

But that's wrong because if you can understand, you can speak.

We use the big-to-small method to teach our students how to speak quickly about anything using the words they already know.

It works with concrete ideas or abstract ones.

The best part?

You can use the method even if you know only about 500 words in English, which is an absurdly small number.

The goal of the big-to-small method is to ensure that you can start by explaining a bigger idea and then add details using vocabulary you already know until people understand what you're saying.

Using our approach, you also learn how to lead people to teach you new words, which helps you hear more words, which means you will learn new words daily.

Pretty amazing, right?

Tell Stories About Your Life with English Words You Know Now

Teacher Sean talked in a webinar about how to speak English fluently - and he did it with a bunch of people who spoke Spanish.

He then asked everyone a simple question: " How many times do you want to explain something but don't know the words?"

Everyone said yes - but here's the deal...

You don't need tons of words to help people understand you. You can tell a simple story or experience in simple words.

Say you want to tell someone that the food "smelled and tasted disgusting," but you don't know the word disgusting.

No problem - tell a story and say, "I see the food, I smell it, and it is bad."

Voilá - now make a face when you say "bad," and people will understand you.

How does all this help you? It makes English part of your daily life.

Using English Daily Helps You Think in English

Imagine you're getting ready in the morning.

Instead of thinking, "necesito cepillarme los dientes," try forming that thought directly in English: "I will brush my teeth now."

That small shift helps your brain get used to processing English without translating from your native language. Over time, this habit reduces speaking delays and allows you to respond faster in conversations with English speakers.

Throughout the day, describe what you're doing as if you were describing it to someone else in English. For example, while cooking breakfast, think about each step: "I'm getting eggs," or "The water is very hot."

And if you don't know a word, find another way to explain the idea using words you do know.

These English learning methods may not feel natural at first, but stick with them consistently.

If you practice them, you will improve your English speaking quickly. You'll begin to understand that you can express anything with communication skills that aren't specific to a language.

Focus on Pronunciation and Intonation

Listening to native speakers is one of the most effective ways to improve how you sound. Pay attention to how they pronounce words and the rhythm of their sentences. Notice where their voice rises and falls during conversations. These ups and downs are called intonation, and it helps convey meaning and emotion in speech. By copying these patterns, you can start sounding more natural when you speak, and you will also understand people more easily.

Improving your pronunciation will make others understand you better, while working on intonation will add clarity to your message.

Both will help improve English speaking quickly by making communication smoother for everyone involved in the conversation process.

However, you can only do this if you make English part of your daily life. You must have some source of practice every day so that you always have English in mind.

Consistent Practice = Big Results

Let's break this down for you.

Learning functional English takes about a year. So if you practice daily, even just 10 minutes, in about 3 months, you can learn all the words you need to tell people what you want in simple English.

So, what are you waiting for?

You can do anything you choose in English - but make it part of your daily life.

The best thing you can do to learn English is to have a structure that allows you to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and you can also surround yourself with others who are learning English.

Even better, what if there were an English learning program for just £13 a month that gives you access to 30+ monthly lessons and teaches you to feel less scared when speaking?

It's not a dream because we built it.

So check out the daily English membership program, and even if you decide not to give it a try, we hope our tips can help you build small daily habits that lead to big change.
